Wartime Contracting workforce hearing on 9/16

ARLINGTON, VA, Sept. 14, 2010 – The Thursday, Sept. 16, hearing by the Commission on Wartime Contracting in Iraq and Afghanistan on issues facing the defense acquisition workforce will start at 9 a.m., a half-hour earlier than the previously announced time.
The session will open with brief remarks from United States Senator Jim Webb (D-VA). The senator is an original sponsor of the 2008 legislation that created the commission.
The hearing will examine whether the U.S. Department of Defense has made adequate plans and actual progress to improve the federal workforce that oversees billions of dollars in contracting activity. The defense acquisition workforce alone stands at more than 125,000 people. Department of Defense contract employees in Iraq and Afghanistan, mostly non-U.S. personnel, numbered nearly 208,000 as of July 2010.
The hearing’s two witness panels comprise 11 witnesses with expertise and policy or operational responsibility in acquisition. The lead-off witness will be Jacques Gansler, PhD, who chaired the Army-sponsored commission that produced the 2007 “Urgent Reform Required” report, commonly known the Gansler Report.
