Freedom of Information Act

The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) 5 U.S.C. § 552 was enacted in 1966 to provide people a means to access Federal agency records, with the exception of those excluded from consideration under the FOIA or protected by one of nine FOIA exemptions and not available to the public.

The Office of Executive Assistance Management (OEAM) develops policies and procedures to implement FOIA and the Privacy Act and coordinates receipt, distribution, and responses to FOIA inquiries with the appropriate operating units. Brenda Dolan is the Departmental FOIA Officer and Fifi Ellis is the FOIA Officer for the Economics and Statistics Administration Headquarters.

 

 How to make a FOIA Request

A FOIA request to the U.S. Department of Commerce should include the following:

The request must be in writing and may be submitted by mail, e-mail, or fax and states that the request is being made under FOIA. Please ensure the envelope is marked "Freedom of Information Request". If you are making your request by e-mail, please include a mailing address and your daytime telephone number should we need to contact you for additional information.
