A national commission investigating the 2008 economic meltdown and chaired by former state Treasurer Phil Angelides has scheduled a field hearing in Sacramento on Thursday, Sept. 23.

The Sacramento hearing is one of four scheduled in cities hit hard by the housing slump. The others are Bakersfield on Sept. 7, Las Vegas on Sept. 8 and Miami on Sept. 21.

Congress created the 10-member Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission last summer to probe causes of the financial downturn that cost thousands of Americans their homes and retirement savings. Former Republican Rep. Bill Thomas of Bakersfield is vice chairman of the commission.

The FCIC is scheduled to complete its work by Dec. 15.

A list of institutions and witnesses will be announced closer to the hearing dates, said an FCIC spokesman.
