The U.S. Department
of Agriculture (USDA),
Agricultural Research Service (ARS)
conducts research in extremely diverse areas involving
prevention, control and management of invasive species.
For example, ARS provides
research in support of action agencies such as the Animal
and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS),
to reduce the rate of introduction of invasive species,
and to rapidly detect, identify and eradicate incipient
species. We also work closely on this issue with States
and local governments; with the USDA National
Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) (formerly
known as the Cooperative State Research, Education,
and Extension Service (CSREES)), Forest Service (FS),
Economic Research Service (ERS),
Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS),
and others; State Agricultural Experiment Stations (SAES);
with many Department of Interior (USDI)
agencies; with the Department of Defense; the private
sector; and with international partners. ARS also
conducts extensive research on the long-term management
of established invasive species, emphasizing biologically
based integrated pest management activities.
