Top Ten Web Analytics Blogs : April2007
Thanks for reminding me guys, here is the latest edition of the top ranked web analytics blogs. (Older Editions: Jan '07, Sept ‘06, July ‘06.)
To be considered for the top blog rankings a blog should primarily be on the topic of Web Analytics (50% of greater number of posts) as judged by a qualitative review (by me) over the last couple of months and the blog should have regular posts during the same time period (the criteria is loose but atleast four to six posts so lots of wiggle room).
I have approximate 45 blogs on my list that I consider for this ranking. If you feel that your blog should be on this list but is not then please email me (blog at kaushik dot net), especially if you are a non-English blog (and hence sadly I am unable to review it).
The hope is to improve the ranking each time it comes out. Here are the top ranked web analytics blogs:
Apr | Jan | Apr'07 | Jan'07 | Sep'06 | Jul'06 | |
1 | 2 | Occam's Razor by Avinash Kaushik |
3,996 | 3,778 | 6,591 | 20,124 |
2 | 3 | Web Metrics Guru by Marshall Sponder |
6,069 | 6,965 | 7,126 | 8,086 |
3 | 1 | Google Analytics Blog by Jeff Gills |
8,087 | 3,532 | 5,005 | N/A |
4 | 4 | Web Analytics World by Manoj Jasra |
14,144 | 17,509 | 35,315 | N/A |
5 | 5 | Eric T. Peterson's Analytics Weblog by Eric Peterson |
21,843 | 27,762 | 36,838 | 91,240 |
6 | 7 | Increasing your website's conversion rate by Robbin Steif |
27,128 | 31,253 | 43,761 | 76,223 |
7 | 6 | Unofficial Google Analytics Blog by Michael Harrison |
28,846 | 31,253 | 36,319 | 61,923 |
8 | 8 | Lies, Damned Lies… by Ian Thomas |
36,666 | 54,743 | N/A | N/A |
9 | 10 | WebAnalytics.be Blog by Aurélie Pols |
37,097 | 80,978 | N/A | N/A |
10 | - | Web Analysis, Behavioral Targeting and Advertising by Anil Batra |
48,459 | N/A | N/A | N/A |
Personal Observations:
- To be on the list you would have needed to have 85 Unique Blogs to link to you in the last six months. That is twice as many as you would have needed to be on the list in January 2007. It keep getting tough in the blogosphere!
- To be ranked #1 you would have needed 625 unique blog links.
(Sidebar: My own technorati ranking is slightly worse than what it was in Jan, even though I have 62 more unique blog links during that time. Just goes to how how the blogosphere in general is growing and how hard it is to achieve a decent technorati ranking.)
- We have one new blog on the list, welcome Anil, and several nice moves, great work Ian and Aurelie/Rene!
- I need to get on Jeff Gillis’s case! : )
Personal Best Blogs Ranking:
With each top blog listing I also present my own personal ranking of the best blogs in the last few months. (using the criteria that they “Eat like a bird, and poop like an elephant”). I appreciate their contributions because they share their wisdom liberally.
# 1 Web Analytics & Affiliate Marketing blog – Dennis R. Mortensen
(Dennis is the COO of indexTools and a good friend. I eagerly look forward to reading each post from Dennis, even when he simply presents himself! You can read any post on the blog but if you only have a few minutes check out: The Long Tail … and how to calculate missing Revenue, make sure you scroll down to comment #4 to learn how to create a double-logarithmic chart. Thanks Dennis.)
# 2 Visioactive – Ian S. Houston
(Ian’s blog is also new and is extremely good. Ian provides a point of view that is candid, refreshing and unique. Besides I love a guy who, like me, can post comments longer than his original post! Check out: Using a framework to define and communicate web analytics measurement. Thanks Ian.)
# 3 N/A
Please read these blogs, link to them, sign up for their RSS feeds, and generally encourage them (it is a tough slog to keep a blog going with everything else in their lives and I am sure a word here and a word there is motivation enough to sustain all bloggers).
What do you all think? Do you agree with the ranking? Do you have a favorite that is not on the list above? Would you rate a blog in the above list differently? Have suggestions for me to consider for my personal rankings? Please share your feedback via comments.

Hi Avinash,
thanks for keeping us in that top 10 and congrats to our 9 successful colleagues ;)
On a side note, I see Technorati listing us at
rank 35,778 (334 links from 112 blogs)
Source: Technorati
Just a heads up, making sure we had the same figures ;)
Cheers,
Julien

Julien: Technorati claims to update their rankings every minute of every day, their claim must be true!! :)
I had done the rankings Sunday afternoon, I notice that the rankings of most blogs on the list has shifted just a little bit since then.

Hi Avinash
I still think my favourite web analytics blog since Jan has to be Matt Bailey's Analytics according to Captain Kirk, because it makes important point about segmentation, uses Star Trek as its criteria and is darned funny!!

cheers

Hi Avinash. Tomorrow or Wednesday, we are moving to wordpress, and our blog address will be http://www.lunametrics.com/blog – so all that link love, all those technorati rankings — they will be gone gone gone. You'll be able to say, "I knew her when her blog was famous." (No 301 on Blogger.)
Now, for my favorite topic, the GA blog and GA documentation. When I was at Google Analytics training, I entered the need for great documentation — including more blog posts — in the GA Idol Contest (which Jeff ran, you will be interested to know.) But I lost. So make of it what you will.

Hi there,
too bad that no German blog made it up tp the list, although we know that USA is ahead in Web Analytics.
But I would like to encourage You to visit my German Web Analytics Blog:

Thanks for the comment Avinash.
It does not take more than that to get ever more excited about it. I am now almost 2 months into my Blog adventure and I think I will add a personal goal of being on your top ten by Christmas :-)
And now I should go write up that “Beyond basic Cost Per Action (CPA) measurement – looking towards CPnA” – post I have been thinking about.
Cheers.. Back into Emetric Dusseldorf.

Hi Avinash.
I'm learning a lot based on Web Analytics and I value your recommendations concerning sites. One of my goals is to encourage more blog links and RSS feeds to my own site. I visit other sites, work to improve my content and hope what goes around comes around. I'm also learning strategy.

Congrats on #1. I am glad to be a part of the top 10 list.

Jon: I have to concur that Matt's post is one of the most brilliant I have read. I highly recommend it to everyone as a awesome example of what it means to do true analysis.
Robbin:I have 100% confident that your rankings will recover after a quick dip. In the end content wins and you have amazing content. I'll keep a eye out for your rankings! :)
Thanks guys (sorry for the delay in replying, life's been… well you know :)),
