The Blue Ribbon Commission on America’s Nuclear Future (Commission), in association with state regional groups that work on high-level radioactive waste policy, hosted a public meeting at the Radisson Plaza Hotel in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The meeting was held to present the draft Commission report (issued on July 29, 2011) and hear feedback from state, local and tribal perspectives - as well as from interested members of the public

I fully support the BRC’s position on the “fundamental ethical obligation to avoid burdening future generations with the entire task of finding a safe permanent solution.” Intergenerational equity must be considered when defining options for the future. Interim storage is a good start but it is only that – interim. Without a complete strategy for managing the nation’s used fuel including a repository and recycling, we are only “kicking the can down the road” and not addressing intergenerational equity. If we only maintain the size of the current fleet, we will have over 240,000 MT of used nuclear fuel in storage by 2100. Waiting will only make disposition of this material more difficult.
