Retrieval of waste

With over 65,000 MTHM of commercial fuel, the defense related spent fuel and high level waste currently in existence, and the generation of 2,000 MTHM of commercial fuel each year is it really necessary to have a repository from which we can recover waste? The development of the technology that may utilize this material is far in the future. It is recognized more than one repository may be necessary. The first repository should be targeted at disposal of the current waste without concern for retrieval. This would greatly simplify the design and operation of the waste repository.
