In October the BRC went to Sweden, primarily to investigate the social and political forces that led to the solution to build a deep geological repository in which to store their high level nuclear waste.

The BRC went to the town of Forsmark north of Stockholm, which contains the proposed site for the long-term burial of all spent fuel from Swedish nuclear power reactors. The BRC hosted a public meeting in this town, and then travelled down to the town of Oskarshamn to tour the ASPO Hard Rock Laboratory and the Central Interim Storage Facility for spent nuclear fuel.  The BRC also hosted a public meeting in Oskarshamn to hear from local elected officials, NGO’s, industry and various community members.  The culmination of the trip to Sweden was a Roundtable discussion in Stockholm with participation by the various Swedish government authorities, regulators, NGO’s, academics, and the Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company.
