Biden pledges tough stimulus oversight

Joe Biden, the vice-president, on Wednesday promised to be a “pain in the neck” to state governors and federal bureaucrats in his new role of overseeing the $787bn in stimulus spending that Barack Obama signed into law last week.

Mr Biden, who was kicking off what will be a weekly White House meeting to oversee the spending, was speaking just hours after Mr Obama defended the stimulus in his congressional address against Republican attacks.
