Capt. Hung Nguyen

Captain Nguyen was born in Vietnam.  His family resettled in San Antonio, Texas in 1975 after the end of the Vietnam War.  Captain Nguyen is a 1986 graduate of the United States Coast Guard Academy, where he achieved distinction as an Academy Scholar.  Upon graduation, he was assigned to the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter VALIANT, a 210-foot cutter, home-ported in Galveston, Texas, as an Assistant Engineering Officer.  In 1988, he was selected to command the LORAN-C Station Gesashi, in Okinawa, Japan.  From 1991 to 1995, Captain Nguyen was assigned as a staff chemical engineer at the Marine Safety Center in Washington D.C.  Additionally, Captain Nguyen has been assigned in the Marine Safety Program as Chief, Merchant Vessel Safety Department at Marine Safety Unit Galveston, Texas; Deputy Commander, Activities Far East, Japan; Commanding Officer, Marine Safety Office Duluth, Minnesota; Executive Officer, Coast Guard Marine Safety Center in Washington D.C.; Commander of Sector Ohio Valley Louisville, Kentucky; and Chief, Prevention Division, at District Fourteen, Honolulu, Hawaii.

Captain Nguyen is the recipient of three Meritorious Service Medal, two Coast Guard Commendation Medals, three Coast Guard Achievement Medals, and two Commandant's Letters of Commendation.


Captain Nguyen earned a Bachelor degree in Chemistry from the United States Coast Guard Academy, a Master of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Rice University in Houston, TX, and a Master of Business Administration from Averett University in Danville, VA.
