Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over LGBT Stance

Lady Gaga Dont Ask Dont Tell

"Born This Way" is Lady Gaga's minority and gay rights anthem, and as such, she's decided not to partner with a chain retailer known for its donations to anti-gay rights political candidates.

Metro Weekly reports, citing sources close to the deal, that Lady Gaga has nixed her deal for an exclusive special edition of her upcoming album; The Advocate then reported that a source close to Gaga said that the company's continued political activity -- specifically the main stumbling block.

"She and Target didn't see eye to eye on Target's policy of political donations and how they affect the LGBT community," the source told the magazine's website.

In July, it was revealed that Target's Political Action Committee had made donations to MN Forward, a PAC that supportered Minnesota State Rep. Tom Emmer's campaign for governor. Emmer is a hardline conservative who holds staunch anti-gay rights stances, and has been linked to a ministry that advocates killing gay people.

Following the revelation, Target CEO Gregg Steinhafel apologized and promised Target would more closely oversee its donations, but in December it was discovered that the company's PAC had donated over $30,000 to anti-gay rights politicians, 3/4 of its political spending in 2010. That included donations to MN Reps. Erik Paulsen and John Kline, both of whom are vehemently anti-gay rights.

When Gaga first struck the deal with the retailer in February, she noted the difficulty she had with Target's history, and said that it had become part of their negotiations.

"That discussion was one of the most intense conversations I've ever had in a business meeting," the singer told Billboard.com. "Part of my deal with Target is that they have to start affiliating themselves with LGBT charity groups and begin to reform and make amends for the mistakes they've made in the past...our relationship is hinged upon their reform in the company to support the gay community and to redeem the mistakes they've made supporting those groups."

She's been an outspoken advocate of gay rights, making speeches to advocate the repeal of "Don't Ask Don't Tell" and suggesting that homophobic soldiers be discharged.

Like much in life...thi s isn't an entirely clear cut case. Target has indeed supported pro gay issues and events. Target has also supported issues and events which aren't. From what I've gleened, from the standpoint of employment , Target is a good place to work if you're GLBT. Personal disclaimer ... we shop there seldom; we're stockholde rs.

Have a good time !! It's time to change your lonely life now !!

The difference is, supporting a pro-gay event does not have an impact on legislation. Supporting an anti-gay candidate has political implications for all gays. Those politicians pass laws that effect our lives. Target is not a good place to work for LGBTs because the money they are working to generate is going to people who seek to pass laws that take away their rights.

Good for her!! We need more people to stand up for eqiual rights for all! The world is changing and many need to change with it. It may be just one small step but it is a step in the right direction.

Like some people said on a site I read and this is true, Target has been doing donating to anti gay people for some time now, AND she still became their partner. Since their has been backlash from fans and she's noticed it(that means less money for her) that is why she is NOW ending the partnership. SHE DOESN'T CARE ABOUT GAYS. Answer me why she would even partner with them in the first place they have been donating to anti gays, why is she NOW leaving? All she cares about are sales and this is the truth. If she really cared about gay people she wouldn't have became a partner with them in the first place. Everyone wants to be a gay icon these days Lady GAG is just another one jumping on that wagon. That is why she's always talking about gay people she just wants to be one just because it's cool right now. Please people stay with Madonna, Elton John, Cyndi Lauper the real people who care about gays. They cared about gay people before it became the "IN" thing. She doesn't give a damn about gay people wake up and STOP supporting her.

Rubbish. It's not just now "IN" to support gay rights. Maybe it just caught your attention. Lady Gaga speaks to a new generation and continued support is always welcomed. There are many homophobes amongst our youth today and her voice speaks loudly and clearly to them. As far as her joining with Target after she knew it had provided funding to antigay candidates, it was an attempt to open minds but Target's continued contibutions to antigay candidates was what broke the deal. She is an entertainer, just as are Elton John, Madonna and Cindi. They are all in trying to make money, as is there right. Why begrudge Lady Gaga while she seek to enlighten the public on LGBT issues? Your beef should be with Target.

Let's remember it was Target who gave its individual pharmacists the right to refuse dispensing birth control.

The execs and the Republicans who serve them care about nothing except their money. (Tax breaks in this economy? Really?)

Affecting Target's bottom line seems like the only way we'll be heard. Boycotts and negative press have a history of changing corporate policies. But we have to agree to do it together--shop our values as much as possible.

The sad thing is no one in the gay community really cares about this and still shops at Target. When I explain to them I get back, yea but he apologized.
