American Academy of Pediatricians Recommend Doctors Screen for Food Insecurity

Taking into consideration that more than 15 million children live in food insecure households, the Academy for American Pediatricians released a policy statement, Promoting Food Security for All Children, calling on doctors to screen all children for food insecurity. This is a major step forward in drawing attention to the public health impact of food insecurity, and draws on much of the research that Children's HealthWatch has been doing for many years.

Building Wealth and Health Network Recruitment is Open!

The Center for Hunger-Free Communities is currently recruiting for a participatory research study that includes:

  • $1 for $1 matched savings up to $480 in savings
  • Financial SELF Empowerment classes once a week for 3 hours (on Drexel University Campus)
  • Online survey every 3 months for a year

Children's Hunger Born of Mothers' Trauma

This year's publication of interACTION, published annually by Drexel University's School of Public Health, features Dr. Mariana Chilton's Childhood Stress Study. The study, led by Chilton and Molly Knowles, the Qualitative Research Coordinator at the Center, used a mixed methods approach to gather information from 31 Philadelphia mothers about their experiences with deprivation, abuse, violence, and neglect, as well as their experiences with hunger, education, and employment.

Witnesses to Hunger Child Nutrition Book Released!

Witnesses to Hunger is proud to release their recommendations for the Child Nutrition Reauthorization.  In this book the members of Witnesses to Hunger share their opinions, suggestions, and experiences with WIC, school meals, and summer meals.
