For 18 months, beginning in 2006 America is commemorating an event that changed the world – the settling of Jamestown, Virginia in 1607, the first permanent English Settlement in North America. Jamestown established the culture that would flourish and leave the legacies of free enterprise, rule of law, representative government and cultural diversity. With the assistance of several state and national partners, educational programs and events are focusing attention on these legacies.

NATIONAL EDUCATION INITIATIVES
“Jamestown Live! Experience the Journey that Changed the World,” Jamestown Live! is the premier education initiative for the commemoration of America’s 400th Anniveray. The live Web cast was made available to national online audiences of students in grades 4-11 on Nov. 9, 2006.
Student ambassadors representing 49 states plus American Samoa and Department of Defense Schools in Bitburg, Germany gathered at Jamestown Nov. 9 to participate in “Jamestown Live! Experience the Journey that Changed the World.” The interactive Web cast was hosted by renowned journalist and national correspondent Gwen Ifill and included interviews with historians and experts by student reporters. Creative programming combined elements of a television news magazine with live performances of young people singing and dancing to historic themes. Also featured on the Web cast was a Town Hall meeting to inspire students to reflect on the impact that the settlement at Jamestown continues to have on their lives and their world.

Curriculum Development
Lesson plans in civics were designed for the Jamestown Journey Web site by the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics. Additional lesson plans created by Historic Jamestowne and APVA Preservation Virginia, Colonial National Historical Park and US Park Service, Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, NASA Langley Research Center, National Geographic, and Colonial Williamsburg have been added to the Web site. These materials were first made available in November 2005 and over 1000 teachers have already registered and are using these resources.
Teaching the Legacies of Jamestown The legacies of Jamestown and the new nation to which it would give rise were not the product of a single source or event, but rather evolved out of a rich confluence of ideas and experiences. Contributions made first by Native American, European, and African cultures fostered what is today one of the most pluralistic and diverse societies on earth.
