Mitchell's The Bees of the Eastern United States

Theodore Mitchell's two volume set The Bees of the Eastern United States was published in 1960 (part I) and 1962 (part II). This set remains the most comprehensive treatment of the eastern North American bee fauna, and we occassionally field requests for copies. Sam Droege (USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center) and Claus Rasmussen (University of Illinois) graciously scanned and OCRed these two books and made them available to us as PDFs. This effort was initiated by Sam's work on the Discover Life bee pages. The scans are split up by family/subject:

Mitchell, T.B. (1960) Bees of the eastern United States. I. Technical bulletin (North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station), 141, 1-538. [Introduction, Andrenidae, Colletidae, Halictidae, Mellitidae]

Mitchell, T.B. (1962) Bees of the eastern United States. II. Technical bulletin (North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station), 152, 1-557. [Megachilidae, Anthophoridae, Apidae s.s.]
