INSTITUTE FOR BIRD
POPULATIONS / NBII BIRD CONSERVATION NODE
NBII/MAPS AVIAN DEMOGRAPHICS QUERY INTERFACE FOR MAPS DATA
REPORTING RESULTS DERIVED FROM 1992-2006 MAPS DATASET
This website was the creation of the Institute for Bird
Populations with particular acknowledgement of the efforts
of Nicole Michel (currently of Tulane), Danielle Kaschube,
David F. DeSante, and Phil Nott (IBP). We also thank NBII
and Elizabeth Martin (USGS) for project support and guidance.
Welcome to The Institute
for Bird Populations' NBII / MAPS Home Page. The Institute for Bird
Populations (IBP) has become a partner with the United States
Geological Survey (USGS) / Biological Resources Division (BRD) in the
National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII) web-based
electronic information network. This has allowed IBP to make available
on-line the annual reports of the MAPS (Monitoring Avian Productivity
and Survivorship) program. From this page, you may click on any of the
links below or on the left side of the page to query the following
categories of information:
-
Adult Populations &
Productivity - regional between-year changes in the numbers
of adults and young captured and in the reproductive index
(young/adult) from MAPS data.
-
Survivorship -
regional annual adult apparent survival rate estimates from modified
Cormack-Jolly-Seber mark-recapture analysis of MAPS data.
-
-
Habitat Information
- basic habitat at the station and NVCS Formation Codes for the
dominant and subdominant habitats.
-
Breeding Status -
of each species captured, seen, or heard at each station.
- Important
Results - Information and downloadable publications outlining
several important MAPS research projects useful to land managers and
state representatives.
This page presents basic information about IBP and the MAPS
program, maps showing the locations of MAPS regions and stations,
and a graph displaying the growth of the MAPS Program during
the years 1989-2006. For further information about the resources
and information available through this interface, please visit
The Institute for Bird Populations' NBII
Information Page.
The Institute for Bird Populations is a tax-exempt, 501(c)(3)
California nonprofit corporation dedicated to fostering a global
approach to research and the dissemination of information on
changes in the abundance, distribution, and ecology of bird
populations. For further information on The Institute for Bird
Populations please visit IBP's
Home Page.
The Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship (MAPS) Program
was created by The Institute for Bird Populations in 1989 to
assess and monitor the vital rates and population dynamics of
over 150 species of North American landbirds in order to provide
critical conservation and management information on their populations.
The MAPS Program utilizes standardized constant-effort mist
netting and banding at a continent-wide network of monitoring
stations staffed by both professional biologists and highly
trained volunteers. For further information on the MAPS program,
please visit IBP's MAPS
Program Page. For detailed information on the MAPS protocol,
please review or download the MAPS Manual from IBP’s
MAPS Materials page,
where you can also download station registration and data forms.
The following maps and shapefiles can be accessed
through http://www.DataBasin.org
(currently you are obliged to setup an ESRI Global Account to
access interactive mapping utilities).
MAPS
Regions: Map of the continental U.S. and
Canada showing the eight MAPS Regions. AK = Alaska Region, B&AC
= Boreal & Arctic Canada Region, NW = Northwest Region, SW =
Southwest Region, NC = North-central Region, SC = South-central Region,
NE = Northeast Region, SE = Southeast Region.
MAPS Station Locations: Locations of the
966 MAPS stations that were operated one or more years between
1992-2006. Some of the larger "individual" points may represent
several stations.
Growth
of the MAPS Program: The first three years
(1989-1991) of MAPS was an IBP-sponsored feasibility study, during
which time the program grew from 16 to 66 stations and the protocol
became standardized. The sparse and incompletely standardized data from
these three years are not included in the Adult Populations &
Productivity or Survivorship data compilations on this NBII / MAPS
web-site. Data from 1989-1991, however, are included in the Breeding
Status data compilations. For more information about the history and
protocol of the MAPS Program, please see the MAPS
Overview.

Acknowledgements: We thank Elizabeth
Martin with the USGS National Biological Information Infrastructure
(NBII) Program for her efforts in facilitating the development
of this project. We also thank all MAPS operators, interns,
biologists and the federal agencies (especially USFS and DoD)
that support long-term monitoring projects, all of which contributed
the formation of this unique dataset.
