Description:
Abstract:
This database contains over 29,900 records of documented occurrences of lichens in units of the U. S. National Park System. The records were obtained from the scientific literature, from National Park Service reports, and from selected herbaria. Unpublished herbarium records from other herbaria are not included because they cannot be cited. Over 530 references reporting lichens from 153 park units are included, spanning the time period from the 1860s through the present day. Only parks with reported lichens are included in the database. This database does not contain a complete park list or detailed information on other aspects of the U. S. National Parks.
Purpose:
The purpose of this database is to compile information about distribution of lichen species within the national park system. The database is intended to be publicly accessible through the internet in the hopes that the availability of this information can further the study of lichen species in North America.

Taxonomic_Procedures:
Varies due to the fact that taxonomy was not verified independently for the purpose of this database. Species were assumed to be correctly identified unless the species was known not to occur in the region or country or there were other obvious reasons why the identification would be incorrect. All taxonomic names from published papers were standardized to the most recently available version of Esslinger's Checklist (see Classification System or Authority) before inclusion into the database.
General_Taxonomic_Coverage:
All lichen species that have been reported in national parks.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
The accuracy of the information in the database has not been independently verified. The database is complete within the parameters that have been set to the best knowledge of its creators and as mistakes and omissions are discovered, they are corrected.

The accuracy of the information contained in the published reports that this database is based on have also not been verified. There is no guarantee that the taxa listed in the database are actually present in any park unit. The data indicate only that the taxa are present as determined by the original sources. This database contains only secondary source material, and not original presence/absence specimen data. Users are encouraged to contact the original references for specimen data.

There is also no guarantee that the species listed for these parks have been correctly identified. No specimens were examined for this purpose for the creation of the NPLichen database.

Finally, the data and the website that serves the data are not in any way officially connected with the National Park Service (NPS). The NPS does not support this database in any official manner.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
This database is logically consistent as far as can be determined by repeated user queries and error-checking on the part of the creators. No tests of logical consistency have been performed.
Completeness_Report:
This database contains all records of documented occurrences of lichens in units of the U. S. National Park System from the scientific literature, from National Park Service reports, and from selected herbaria. Unpublished herbarium records are not included.
