Cactus Moth Detection and Monitoring Network
Concerned about the potential damage caused by the cactus moth, a partnership has been formed between federal agencies (USGS BRD, USDA APHIS), state agencies (states' Departments of Agriculture), universities (Mississippi State University) Cooperative Extension Service, and other interested groups to monitor the distribution of the cactus moth. This partnership developed the Cactus Moth Detection and Monitoring Network, composed of volunteer monitors from public and private land management units, garden clubs and Master Gardeners to monitor the spread of the moth. The program relies on volunteers to monitor cactus populations and report observations. This is the first step of an Early Detection and Rapid Response (EDRR) approach. The data will be used to support modeling efforts to better predict likely locations for new prickly pear cactus and cactus moth, helping guide surveys. Cactus Moth Detection and Monitoring Network

Cactus Locations
The CMDMN is storing several different types of information about prickly pear cactus and the cactus moth. Some of this information is provided graphically through a GIS application. The system displays the locations of prickly pear cacti with the moth sightings included. Negative reports are also being used for modeling purposes. In the effort to monitor the progress of the cactus moth, sentinel sites have been established along the leading edge. These sites are monitored on a regular basis for the presence of the cactus moth. Cactus Locations

An important focus of the project is the early detection of, and rapid response to, new invasions. IPANE

Invasive Plant Atlas of the MidSouth (IPAMS)
A large number of invasive aquatic and terrestrial plant species have become introduced into the United States. While several agencies have developed databases for tracking the locations and status of these invaders, these agencies do not have the resources to thoroughly track the presence and locations of these species in the states, relying instead on voluntary reporting of locations. An important component to a state and regional coordination of management efforts will be an accessible and up-to-date database of invasive species locations and actions to manage them, operated and managed at the regional level. GRI is actively mapping the locations of invasive aquatic and terrestrial plant species in the Midsouth, and entering them into our web-based database for invasive plant species. This database will be developed in collaboration with national USGS and other agency databases and structures, and the Invasive Plant Atlas of New England (IPANE), with mechanisms and procedures in place to ensure data transmission both upward (nationally) and downward to the local level for rapid assessment and response. North American Breeding Bird Atlases
Breeding Bird Atlas (BBA) is a population survey project designed to cover large geographic areas using a grid based system and is generally organized at the state or provincial level. Each participant in the project, referred to as an observer or 'atlaser', is assigned one or more blocks (grid cells) in which to conduct extensive area searches. They record any breeding evidence observed for each bird species; this evidence is categorized as "confirmed", "probable" or "possible". The results can be mapped and will then provide comprehensive information about the distribution of breeding birds in the region covered.

United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Focal Species
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Migratory Bird Program's Focal Species Strategy (PDF) identifies migratory bird species in need of focused conservation action and then leads targeted campaigns to return the species to healthy and sustainable levels, as a means to better measure success in achievement of conservation priorities. The Strategy began in 2005 when 139 focal species were selected by evaluating characteristics such as population trends, small population sizes or ranges, threats to habitats, and other factors including likelihood of conservation success. Each year, the USFWS identifies a subset of these focal species as the focus for development of species conservation action plans. Individual focal species pages and outcomes are accessible through this site. (USFWS) Focal Species
