Avian Influenza H5N1 in Naturally Infected Domestic Cat Show Full Record 1570 Bookmark and Share

Abstract:   From abstract (free full-text available): We report H5N1 virus infection in a domestic cat infected by eating a pigeon carcass. The virus isolated from the pigeon and the cat showed the same cluster as the viruses obtained during the outbreak in Thailand. Since cats are common house pets, concern regarding disease transmission to humans exists. [Includes figures and tables.]
Avian Influenza H5N1 in Tigers and Leopards Show Full Record 711 Bookmark and Share

Abstract:   From abstract (free full-text available): Influenza virus is not known to affect wild felids. We demonstrate that avian influenza A (H5N1) virus caused severe pneumonia in tigers and leopards that fed on infected poultry carcasses. This finding extends the host range of influenza virus and has implications for influenza virus epidemiology and wildlife conservation. [Includes tables and illustrations].
Avian Influenza H5N1 Reported in Michigan Likely Low Path Strain Show Full Record 1658 Bookmark and Share

Abstract:   From National Wildlife Health Center (NWHC) bulletin: Routine wild bird surveillance has indicated the presence of H5N1 avian influenza in samples from two wild Mute swans in southern Michigan, according to an announcement made on August 14 by U.S. Departments of Agriculture and Interior. Preliminary testing has ruled out the possibility that this is the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain occurring in Asia, Europe, and Africa. Test results thus far indicate this is low pathogenicity avian influenza (...

Abstract:   From abstract (online abstract only): In 1997, a high-pathogenicity H5N1 avian influenza virus caused serious disease in both man and poultry in Hong Kong, China. Eighteen human cases of disease were recorded, six of which were fatal. This unique virus was eliminated through total depopulation of all poultry markets and chicken farms in December 1997. Other outbreaks of high-pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) caused by H5N1 viruses occurred in poultry in 2001 and 2002. These H5N1 viruses isola...

Abstract:   From abstract (online abstract only): Between 1997 and 2001, there was one report of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in the Western Hemisphere and Pacific Basin. In 1997, in New South Wales, Australia, an outbreak caused by avian influenza (AI) virus subtype H7N4 involved both chickens and emus. All other reports of infections in poultry and isolations from wild bird species in the region pertained to low pathogenicity (LP) AI virus. Animal Health Officials in Canada reported isolations...
Avian Influenza Low Pathogenic H5N1 vs. Highly Pathogenic H5N1 [Fact Sheet] Show Full Record 1733 Bookmark and Share

Abstract:   From fact sheet introduction: There are two types of avian influenza (AI) that are identified as H5N1. A difference exists in the virus classification; one is low pathogenic (LPAI) and the other is highly pathogenic (HPAI). Pathogenicity refers to the ability of the virus to produce disease. HPAI H5N1, often referred to as the "Asian" H5N1, is the type causing worldwide concern. LPAI H5N1, often referred to as the "North American" H5N1, is of less concern. Following is an explanation of the diff...
