NBII Program Termination Letter from Kevin Gallagher

June 3, 2011

NBII Partners:

As you are likely aware, this is a year of exceptional budget challenges.  In the President's budget for Fiscal Year 2012, the National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII) under the Biological Information Management and Delivery Program is slated for termination.  As a result, the funding that has facilitated our NBII Node partnerships in the past will no longer be available.

The year-long continuing resolution for Fiscal Year 2011 just recently enacted by Congress accelerates the reductions in the Fiscal Year 2012 budget by including a $3.8 million decrease for the NBII.  As a result, we are forced to begin the termination of the NBII in Fiscal Year 2011.  That means that we must reduce the level of support to our partners this year.  We recognize that the late notice of our inability to fund the planned partnerships may present great difficulty to your program.  We apologize, but believe that we have no choice, given the reduction in funding in the recently enacted budget.

The U.S. Geological Survey values very highly our partnerships cultivated over the past several years through the NBII.  We hope we can continue to collaborate even in this difficult time to advance our shared vision of making biological data widely available and to preserve as much of our past investment as possible. If you have any questions, please contact Michael McDermott at (703) 648-5771, or by email at mmcdermo@usgs.gov.

Sincerely,
Kevin T. Gallagher

NBII Program Termination Announcement

September 30, 2011

NBII Partners:

This past summer many of you received a letter from Kevin Gallagher, Associate Director, Core Science Systems within the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), regarding the National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII) Program termination.   We would like to update you on the latest progress toward the disposition of the NBII applications such as systems, databases, websites, etc. in light of the termination language.

On January 15, 2012, the NBII website and any applications residing on the nbii.gov domain will be shut down and no longer available. This includes any applications, websites, or tools that currently exist, hosted either at USGS or a partner site. Beginning on October 3rd, you will see announcements on all NBII websites and applications related to this termination of the NBII.

All NBII funded applications are being evaluated based on a standardized criteria as well as feedback from you as to whether or not you intend to continue supporting a particular application.  These evaluations will be shared with you by November 18th to discuss the final disposition of your applications.

The USGS values your contributions and commitment to NBII's success over the past several years.  Thank you for your participation in NBII.

If you have any questions, please contact Michael McDermott at (703) 648-5771, or by email at mmcdermo@usgs.gov.

Sincerely,
