Texas Future Fuels
Toward a Low Carbon Transportation Fuel Portfolio
The Texas Future Fuels project starts from three primary observations: (1) that Texas is expanding into a more diverse set of transportation fuels, (2) that carbon content will help define technical, market and policy options, and (3) that a portfolio approach is a useful paradigm for transportation fuels. The project is supported by the Energy Foundation.
Transportation fuels are major contributors to Texas air quality problems, and increasingly a concern due to volatile energy prices and the prospects of carbon emissions regulations. There are no easy choices for supplementing or replacing conventional transportation fuels. Although limited by comparison with conventional fuels, the Texas portfolio currently includes natural gas, propane, electricity, ethanol, hydrogen, and biodiesel. This diversity of fuels has evolved over time in response to public policy initiatives, alternative fuel incentives, and incremental project development. While alternative transportation fuels in Texas today comprise only a small fraction of total Texas transportation fuels, the existing diversity and growing interest illustrate that a much broader portfolio is possible.
