Meeting the Invasive Species Challenge (National Invasive Species Council, 2001)

This Plan presents nine interrelated and equally important areas that the Council considers priorities in addressing invasive species problems. The following actions are recommended. The Council will undertake these actions in coordination and partnership with other stakeholders as appropriate:

  • Leadership and Coordination
  • Prevention
  • Early Detection and Rapid Response
  • Control and Management
  • Restoration
  • International Cooperation
  • Research
  • Information Management
  • Education and Public Awareness

State ANS Plans

red capital letters ANS with smaller blue

The ANS Task Force encourages state and interstate planning entities to develop management plans describing detection and monitoring efforts of aquatic nuisance species, prevention efforts to stop their introduction and spread, and control efforts to reduce their impacts. Plans approved by the ANSTF are eligible for funding under the Aquatic Nuisance Species Control and Prevention Act.

Invasive Species Management Information

Critical issues in creating an effective invasive species early detection/rapid assessment and response information system are as follows:

  • determining the taxonomic identity of the invasives that are reported;
  • pinpointing and mapping their occurrence;
  • determining the pathways of spread and how to close them;
  • determining the organization(s) responsible for implementing a timely reaction in all affected areas;
  • compiling and making freely available, species information and management knowledge to enable appropriate action; and
  • broadening awareness of the early detection/rapid assessment and response system to increase its use by scientists and the public.
