Invasive Aquatic Plants - What every plant enthusiast should know!

cover of brochure

Water gardeners and aquarium hobbyists can unintentionally spread potentially harmful plants when they 1) share specimens among friends, neighbors, and gardening and aquarium clubs, or 2) dispose of aquatic plants by releasing them into a natural waterway.

Read about some common aquarium and pond plants and what you can do to prevent their spread!

Invasive aquatic plants are often fast growing, aggressive and can dramatically change water bodies after their introduction. Invasive aquatic plants can completely fill the water column or cover the surface so that fish are driven from the area. Often swimming, boating and other recreation uses can be negatively affected or even dangerous in areas with invasive aquatic plants.

These plants may be introduced intentionally or escape from cultivation. One in the wild, nonindigenous plants can colonize aquatic communities where they compete with and often displace native species. Hydrilla (Hydrilla verticillata), water-hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) and Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum) are examples well known for their ability to alter physical and biological functions of aquatic systems.

Collapse14th International Conference on Aquatic Invasive Species
Description: From website: "The US Geological Survey is hosting the 14th International Conference on Aquatic Invasive Species (ICAIS) that will be held in Key Biscayne, Florida, from May 14 to 19, 2006... This conference series has evolved over the last decade into the most comprehensive international forum for the review of accumulated scientific knowledge; presentation of the latest field research; introduction of new technological developments for prevention, monitoring and control; and discussion of policy, legislation, public education and outreach initiatives to raise awareness of the impacts of aquatic invasive species and prevent new introductions.
