Holiday closure
The herbarium will be closed for the winter holidays from Thursday December 22 until January 2. We will reopen at 8 am Tuesday January 3. All package shipments will cease December 9 to ensure proper delivery. We will resume shipping loans, etc. on January 4.

Regional Web Site expands! USU-Eastern has now started to publish records to the web. That brings to five regional herbaria that are now contributing information (BYU, Snow, USU, UVU, and USU-Eastern. Everyone is slowing down right now because of exams, term papers, and yes - holiday preparations - but growth will resume in January. Enjoy the holidays! Link to site.

More networks: The Intermountain Herbarium is, or will soon be, contributing records to three more networks, for bryophytes, fungi, and lichens. Like the vascular plant network, these networks use the SYMBIOTA software so if you learn how to use one, you can use them all.

A banner year: During 2011, we added over 3350 specimens to the collection, more than in any of the last five years; increased the number of specimens databased by 2196; and imaged over 9,000 specimens. We now have ~256,500 specimens of which 105,836 are databased. All our databased records and specimen images are available through the regional web site. We thank Ed Gilbert, developer of the SYMBIOTA software that we use, and the Utah Agriculture Experiment Station for additional funding during 2011. Together they enabled establishment of the regional web site - and more rapid databasing.

History of a floral tapestry: Dr. Hilary Turner has been studying the history of English sixteenth century wall tapestries. The link is to an article about a floral tapestry for which Piep and Barkworth helped with plant identification.

Now available : Manual of grasses for North America; Grasses of the Intermountain Region.We are having to reprint this. Iin response to numerous requests, the reprinted version will have a spiral binding.

The herbarium is located in The Junction basement. Its mailing address is 5305 Old Main Hill, Utah State University, Logan, Utah 84322-5305. Do not look for Old Main Hill when you arrive in town. It is a fiction. Go to the map and look for the basement of the Junction.

Visitors
The herbarium WELCOMES visitors. It is open from 8 am- 5 pm during the week. If research workers visiting the region cannot make it during these hours, they should contact Mary Barkworth. We shall try to accommodate your needs.

Items for Sale
The herbarium is selling note cards with illustrations of grasses and attractive prints made from some of its specimens. All proceeds go to the herbarium.

Cache Chapter - Utah Native Plant Society

2012 Native Propagation Workshop

Start your own native and water-wise plants at the 2012 edition of this perennial workshop. UNPS gardeners and Cache Master Gardeners will be on hand to lead you thru this years seed and cutting selections. A great way to increase the diversity in your yard and cheaply propagate some of those natives you have been craving!

Dates: Thursday March 22 (6-9 pm) or Saturday March 24 (9 am - noon)

Where: USU Teaching Greenhouse - 1390 North 800 East, Logan

Cost: $25 (discount for UNPS members & Master Gardeners)
