The Pacific Southwest Region of the US Forest Service manages 20 million acres of National Forest land in California and assists the State and Private forest landowners in California, Hawaii and the U.S. Affiliated Pacific Islands. Eighteen national forests are located in this region.

On December 14, 2011, Afghanistan War veterans Ron Borba and Ben Molitor arrived home from their recent deployment to a warm welcome from the employees of the Klamath National Forest. Ron and Ben were deployed to Afghanistan for the past 11 months with the California National Guard working as engineers. More »

The U.S. Forest Service and organizers of Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month are working together to promote Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month 2012 and the health benefits of winter outdoor activity. According to USFS data, alpine skiing is the second most popular recreation on Forest Service land behind hiking. At an evening ceremony in Sacramento, Regional Forester Randy Moore announced the winners of the 2011 Regional Forester Honor Awards. These awards recognize truly outstanding service by Forest Service employees and partners; those who have achieved exceptional results because of their dedication, leadership and hard work. Honor award categories included Ecological Restoration, Healthy Workplace/Workforce and Special Accomplishments. National award recipients were also honored. Flickr photostream »

The 2012 “Get to Know” calendar is a wonderful collection of wildlife art, poems, and photography that was drawn, written and clicked by children from all over the country. There were several winning entries from kids here in California. The contest congratulation event took place in early November at the Gene Autry National Center and Museum in Los Angeles and was a huge success. More »

Across Los Padres National Forest, employees are embarking on a Safety Engagement journey intended to shift the emphasis on safety from a program to a core value and change the way we think, talk and act relative to safe practices. The Capitol Christmas Tree, the 65' white fir dubbed "the People's Tree," made a special stop at the Central Valley Children's Hospital in Fresno, CA, to visit with the children before embarking on its two week journey to the nation's capitol. The children were able to visit with Smokey Bear and his firefighting pals from the Sierra National Forest as well as Sierra NF Law Enforcement Officers and K-9 units, while viewing the 118 year-old-tree and signing the banner that decks the sides of the tree's trailer. Carlo F. Eugenio, a heavy equipment operator for Angeles National Forest and known for his upbeat personality, was killed recently during deployment as a National Guard soldier to Afghanistan. He is the first California Guardsman to die during combat in that nation, according to military officials. More »

The Pacific Southwest Region recently welcomed French fire officials Philippe DelQuie and Pierre Bisone on a visit sponsored by Fire and Aviation Management. Bisone, a Major, and DelQuie a Captain, hail from the Bouches-du-Rhone (Aix-En-Provence) Fire Department, a provincial fire agency in the South of France. Their duties include wildland fire management in a Mediterranean climate similar to that found on national forestlands in southern California. More »

The Kern and Tulare Counties Resource Advisory Committee (RAC) consist of 15 members appointed by the Secretary of Agriculture. The RAC was formed in 2010 to recommend funding for special projects using partnerships that implement forest stewardship objectives under the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act. In 2011, the committee met five times and recommended funding 12 projects, in addition to five projects approved in 2010, totaling $379,254. More »

Planning Rule Revision: Nearly 300,000 comments were received on the proposed rule and draft environmental impact statement during the 90-day comment period which closed May 16, 2011.
National Interagency Fire Center: Provides statistical fire data and a detailed list of wildland fires by state.
Ecosystem Services: The Forest Service is exploring national opportunities to advance markets and payments for ecosystem services. With help from our partners and others, we will encourage broader thinking and collaboration that stimulates market-based conservation and stewardship.
Fiscal Year 2012 Budget: The FY 2012 President's budget request for the Forest Service totals $5.1 billion in discretionary appropriations, a decrease of $178 million from the FY 2011 Budget Estimate.
