CollapseAlaska Geobotany Center
Description: As described on the Web site: The Alaska Geobotany Center (AGC) is dedicated to understanding northern ecosystems through the use of geographic information systems, remote sensing, and field experiments. Work primarily consists of the utilization of GIS, remote sensing, field experiments and field surveys to obtain a greater understanding of ecosystem processes and functions, and to create geo-referenced maps at a variety of scales and closely related themes. The focus is on vegetation, with a strong emphasis on soils, hydrology, geology, permafrost, and climatological interactions. Work is conducted throughout the arctic regions of the world, although most projects are focused at least in part in Alaska. Main products are maps and data sets from a host of areas throughout the arctic. Ranging from the circumpolar to microsite, there are a variety of vegetation, geology, soils, hydrology, and topography maps. Particular map themes range anywhere from Normalized Difference Vegetation Index of the entire Circumpolar Arctic to Landscape Cover of the Russian Taimyr, to the nesting bird density at Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. Also a host of maps have been created that capture changes over time, such as the history of land use in Prudhoe Bay.
