Forests 2011: International Year of Forests

International Year of Forests 2011

The United Nations General Assembly declared 2011 as the International Year of Forests to raise awareness on sustainable management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests.

As a member of the Collaborative Partnership on Forests, IUCN will play a key role in increasing public awareness of the centrality of the world’s forests to human and natural well-being. Over the course of the year, IUCN will be highlighting new findings from its innovative Livelihoods and Landscapes Strategy, announcing bold new initiatives in its forest landscape restoration work and building upon recent successes of the international 2010 REDD-plus (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest degradation) agenda.

REDD is an approach to achieving reductions in global greenhouse gas emissions that is currently under negotiation at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). REDD-plus includes: Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation and the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries.

You will be able to find out more about 'Forests 2011' on the pages of this website International Year of Forests. 2011

The International Day for Biological Diversity 22 May 2009
Invasive Alien Species

The International Day for Biological Diversity - 22 May 2009 - Invasive Alien Species

The theme for the International Day on Biological Diversity (IDB) in 2009 was invasive alien species (IAS) - one of the greatest threats to biodiversity, and to the ecological and economic well-being of society and the planet. Designation of IDB 2009 on the theme of invasive alien species provides Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and those dealing with IAS, opportunity to raise awareness of the issue and increase practical action to tackle the problem.

The CBD has developed a number of materials for the IDB that provide excellent information sources on IAS available at http://www.cbd.int/idb/2009/.

On this web page you will find links to a downloadable poster, a bookmark, as well an illustrated 24-page booklet "Invasive Alien Species: a threat to biodiversity".
