Aliens: The Invasive Species Bulletin

The Invasive Species Specialist Group publishes its newsletter Aliens: The Invasive Species Bulletin bi-annually. It provides interesting and timely information on invasive species and associated issues.

Contributions, should focus on conservation issues rather than economic, health or agricultural aspects of alien invasions. News of upcoming conferences, publications, and reports are also welcome. Please send your contributions, marked "for consideration for Aliens" to Scalera.Riccardo@gmail.com

The Invasive Species Management book focuses on invasive alien species which been spread deliberately or accidently by humans and have caused ecological change. As a result humans are now applying principles for the prevention and/or control of invasive species.

The effective management of invasive alien species is clearly a priority for biological conservation worldwide. This book first provides strategies for managing such species at successive invasion stages, from prevention at the border to control of major infestations. It then describes the general tools and approaches that are recommended for successful management of particular groups of invasive organisms in a range of environments. In each case, the ecological basis and practical requirements of invasive alien species management are addressed.

The handbook will be useful to a wide readership of students, academics, conservation practitioners, invasive species managers, legislators, and to the broader community concerned with biological conservation.

Towards an early warning and information system for invasive alien species (IAS)
threatening biodiversity in Europe
The European Environmental Agency (EEA) has published an assessment of the feasibility to establish a European Early Warning and Information System on biological invasions.
This technical report has been prepared by a team of experts led by the Institute for Environmental Research and Protection (Italy) through a collaboration with ISSG. It contributes to the ongoing development of a EU Strategy on invasive alien species, that the European Commission committed to complete in 2011. more >>

Guidelines on Biofuels and Invasive Species
The guidelines developed by IUCN in close cooperation with the Roundtable on Sustainable Biofuels (RSB) outline step-by-step recommendations for how to minimise risks of biological invasions along the biofuels supply chain.

Global indicators of biological invasion: species numbers, biodiversity impact and
policy responses: A report on the outcome.
Invasive alien species (IAS) pose a significant threat to biodiversity. The Convention on Biological Diversity’s 2010 Biodiversity Target, and the associated indicator for IAS, has stimulated globally coordinated efforts to quantify patterns in the extent of biological invasion, its impact on biodiversity and policy responses.
