Researchers Find New Non-Native Invasive
Species (Aug 19, 2010)
Massachusetts Energy
and Environmental Affairs.
A team of 20 scientists
led by the Massachusetts Office of Coastal
Zone Management and the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology Sea Grant College
Program discovered the first European shrimp
to appear in North American waters, in Salem
on Jul 31. The shrimp, Palaemon
elegans (known as "Rock Pool
Prawn" in
England) is a carnivore, consuming large numbers
of smaller crustaceans. The discovery was made
during a Massachusetts survey to collect, identify
and catalogue marine organisms in coastal waters
from Cape Cod through Maine's mid-coast. Previous
surveys have revealed over 30 introduced marine
organisms, several of which were identified
for the first time in New England coastal waters.
These rapid assessment surveys help scientists
identify problem areas and find solutions to
prevent the spread of invasive species.
Asian
Longhorned Beetle Eradication Program
Massachusetts Introduced Pests Outreach
Project.
The Asian
longhorned beetle ( Anoplophora glabripennis, "ALB"), a pest of
hardwood trees including maple, birch and horse chestnut, was first discovered
in Worcester, Massachusetts in 2008. Since their discovery, $50 million in federal
and state money has been spent to eradicate the beetle, and 25,000 infested trees
in the Worcester area have been cut down in an effort to halt the spread. See
Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) Asian
Longhomed Beetle site for the latest federal news and information, and survey
and treatment maps.
If you think you have seen this beetle,
we encourage you to submit a report
and photos, or you can call the toll-free
hotline at 1-866-702-9938.

Zebra mussels, a highly aggressive aquatic
invasive species, was discovered at Laurel
Lake in Aug 2009. A Clean
Boat Cerfication Form (PDF | 647 KB) is
required for all watercraft at state boat ramps
that are determined to be a high or moderate
risk for zebra mussel colonization. Failure
to comply can result in a fine.

Sets Boat Inspection Procedures for the
Quabbin Reservoir Fishing Season (PDF

Massachusetts Department of Conservation
and Recreation.
State officials determined that a properly
implemented boat inspection and washing program
could prevent the transfer of mussels or aquatic
invasive plants into the Quabbin Reservoir.
In response, the Department of Conservation
and Recreation has established procedures for
boat inspections that will be required for
all private boats on the Quabbin Reservoir
that do not currently have an official Quabbin
boat seal. The Quabbin fishing season is Apr
17-Oct 16, 2010.
