About the Pollinators Project
Mission: The USGS Pollinators Project supports efforts to increase access to information about the taxonomy, biology, ecology, conservation status and threats to native pollinators, pollinator-dependent species, and pollinator habitats in the United States and abroad.
Pollinators such as bees, birds, bats, insects, and reptiles play a crucial role in flowering plant reproduction and in the production of most fruits and vegetables. Without the assistance of native pollinators, most plants cannot reproduce. Declines in the health and population of native pollinators could pose a substantial threat to biodiversity, global agricultural economics and food supplies, and to human health. Several native North American pollinator species are already federally listed as endangered.
Data and information on pollinators is sparse and where it does exist, it is often difficult to access. Successful monitoring, management, and conservation of pollinators depend on the availability and accessibility of information.
In cooperation with its partners, the USGS Pollinators Project will support, develop, and provide information and tools to serve the needs of professionals, researchers, biodiversity and land managers, educators and students, members of the public and of the international community concerned with the conservation status of pollinators.
The Pollinators Project coordinates efforts to address the need for information and technology to support monitoring, management, and conservation of pollinators and pollinator habitats.
