About the Pollinators Project

Mission:
The USGS Pollinators Project supports efforts to increase access to information about the taxonomy, biology, ecology, conservation status and threats to native pollinators, pollinator-dependent species, and pollinator habitats in the United States and abroad.

Pollinators such as bees, birds, bats, insects, and reptiles play a crucial role in flowering plant reproduction and in the production of most fruits and vegetables. Without the assistance of native pollinators, most plants cannot reproduce. Declines in the health and population of native pollinators could pose a substantial threat to biodiversity, global agricultural economics and food supplies, and to human health. Several native North American pollinator species are already federally listed as endangered.

Data and information on pollinators is sparse and where it does exist, it is often difficult to access. Successful monitoring, management, and conservation of pollinators depend on the availability and accessibility of information.

In cooperation with its partners, the USGS Pollinators Project will support, develop, and provide information and tools to serve the needs of professionals, researchers, biodiversity and land managers, educators and students, members of the public and of the international community concerned with the conservation status of pollinators.

Partners:
The USGS Pollinators Project works closely with national and international organizations and particularly recognizes the valuable contributions of the North American Pollinator Protection Campaign (NAPPC) administered by the Pollinator Partnership (P2), and of the Ecological Society of America (ESA).

The ESA and the NBII developed the Ecological Information Network (EIN), an online directory of ecologists available through the NBII. Through a Memorandum of Understanding, the ESA and the NBII, as well as the Federal Geographic Data Committee and The Nature Conservancy, help further the development and use of the National Vegetation Classification System and also use the NBII as the distribution and exchange mechanism for vegetation classification data. ESA also provides scientific expertise and content for several informatics projects. Through a Cooperative Agreement, the ESA is developing a comprehensive web site about Pollinators and issues related to Pollinator management and conservation.
