Authorities are detouring Appalachian Trail hikers around a wildfire on Tinker Mountain in Botetourt County.
Denny McCarthy with the Virginia Department of Forestry tells The Roanoke Times that the fire has burned about 12 acres and is likely to grow before it can be contained. He says lightning may have caused the fire.
The fire is located near Troutville and is visible to travelers on Interstate 81, U.S. 11 and U.S. 220.
A helicopter is being used to drop water on the fire.
Botetourt County Emergency Operations coordinator Jason Ferguson asks sightseers to stay away so firefighters and equipment can travel narrow roads leading to the fire.
