Update on the S.S. Montebello Assessment
Montebello underway.
Starting on October 10, OR&R provided expertise in maritime history, biology, and scientific support to assist U.S. Coast Guard to assess the wreck of the S.S. Montebello, sunk by a Japanese submarine off the coast of California in 1941. On October 19, the Coast Guard announced that the on-scene assessment operations and the unified command has determined that there is no substantial oil threat from the Montebello to California waters and shorelines. The only operation that remains is the collection of hull samples to help determine corrosion status. (posted: October 25, 2011)
