Fact Sheets for NBII Nodes & Projects

Nodes are interconnected access points to data and information on the NBII network. Multiple partners contribute data, information, expertise, and infrastructure towards the development of each node. Regional nodes have a geographic orientation, and represent a regional and local approach to data issues and needs. Thematic nodes focus on a particular biological discipline or issue, and provide the support and infrastructure to address these issues at multiple geographic scales.

Projects, while not Congressionally-designated NBII nodes, represent important sub-regions or emerging issues that require an early and sustained focus to build the partnerships and infrastructure necessary for sharing and accessing data and information by stakeholders.

CollapseChronic Wasting Disease Data Clearinghouse Fact Sheet
Description: The Chronic Wasting Disease Data Clearinghouse marks the first time 21st century communications and GIS technology, combined with a standardized data collection format, are being used to study a wildlife disease on a national scale. This collaborative toolprovides natural resource, agricultural, and other professionals with access to a powerful, interactive, and secure environment to store and query CWD surveillance, research, and testing data. The CWDDC presents a vision for the future of wildlife health data management where collaborating with a colleague in the next time zone is as easy as collaborating with one in the next office. A common set of standards and GIS tools make entering data and retrieving test results easy and reliable.

CollapseAppalachian Trail Community: Southern Appalachian Information Node and the NBII Portal in Action
Description: The Appalachian Trail traverses 14 states, 8 national forests, 5 national park units, and several state forests and parks. Numerous localized natural resource inventory and monitoring (I&M) activities occur along the AT corridor. The NBII Portal AT Community serves as a central point of coordination and collaboration for many of these efforts, such as planning and facilitating a symposium to establish a mega-transect for environmental monitoring along the Appalachian Trail.

NBII Breaks New Ground in Data Collection and Verification

Fact Sheet Image

The Central Southwest / Gulf Coast Information Node (CSWGCIN) is working with Big Bend National Park and the U.S. Army's Fort Hood to implement hand-held pocket PCs and ArcPad software for fast, accurate, easy, and cost-effective data collection in the field. CSWGCIN has produced a fact sheet on this project.
