Two important initiatives of the Obama Administration--the first-ever National Ocean Policy and the creation of Data.gov--come together to make Federal ocean and coastal planning data more accessible to the American people.
Three members of the National Ocean Council's Governance Coordinating Committee lend their voices in support of the National Ocean Policy.
The National Ocean Policy’s Framework for Effective Coastal and Marine Spatial Planning calls for the development of a robust information management system to allow easy access to and transparency of data and information necessary for coastal and marine spatial planning. Successful planning requires the synthesis of a broad range of data and information about ocean, coastal, and Great Lakes environments and the way people use these environments.
To fit these needs, the National Ocean Council teamed with the Data.gov initiative to create ocean.data.gov, an open and accessible website that houses and references a wealth of information and tools available to support ocean planning efforts.
The National Ocean Council has published the National CMSP Workshop Report Summary.
Throughout June, the National Ocean Council will host 12 public listening sessions around the country. There are three main objectives for these listening sessions: 1) to hear about and discuss the actions and issues most important to Americans, 2) to use this knowledge to inform development of each of the nine strategic action plans, and 3) to offer a forum for the public to learn about the National Ocean Policy.
