New Jersey Black Bear Attack Update: Kids' Injuries Not From Bear

Black Bear

Remember that reported bear 'attack' that happened on Wednesday in a New Jersey state park that apparently injured two kids on a camping trip?

Well, turns out the bear didn't actually attack the kids. Instead, camp counselors made assumptions about the attack amidst the drama of the bear's visit.

As for those injuries, doctors examined the boys when admitted to hospital and discovered a blistered foot and an old scratch on the shoulder, both old wounds they got before the camping trip The Star Ledger.

"It appears that the injuries were not from the attack," said Larry Herrighty, assistant director of the state Department of Environmental Protection’s Division of Fish and Wildlife.

"The scratches and the abrasions were not caused by a bear — they were not fresh wounds."

The bear did indeed visit the campsite where nine inner city boys and two adult camp counselors were sound asleep at 4:30am.

Officials said it pulled at a sleeping bag and knocked a tent down.

Counselors and the boys proceeded to take shelter and make noise by clapping and singing camp songs after they called for help.

The bear left, but then returned shortly after where it began rummaging through the campsite when a wildlife technician arrived and shot it in the neck.

The bear then escaped into the woods and was being tracked by conservation officers and a blood-sniffing dog, officials told the New York Post.

Snares and traps were set in the area in an effort to halt the animal.

Sections of the Appalachian Trail and intersecting hiking trails running through Stokes State Forest were closed as authorities searched for the bear, which is reportedly still on the run.

Despite the news of the 'attack' on the kids never actually happening, wildlife officials said they are still looking for the bear and would still shoot it because it is agressive and qualifies as a "Category One Bear", reports The Examiner.

"The bear will be shot and killed when found because it's considered an aggressive animal toward humans," Larry Ragonese, a DEP spokesman.

Black bears have a reputation for being more curious than harmful and are easily scared by noise.

UPDATE: 11:48 am EDT
An earlier version of this post reported that two children were left injured from a bear attack in a New Jersey State Park.

The Star Ledger now reports after the children were admitted to hospital, doctors discovered their wounds were old and had not been sustained by a bear attack, said officials. The bear did not attack the children, but it did rummage through the campsite.

Stay the hell out of the Bears territory. People force themselves upon wildlife, camping, destroying there domain, then wonder why wild animals attack when the idiots are in the animals lair

I went camping this past weekend. A bear snuffled around our tent in the middle of the night about two or three times and then left. The next morning, the bear was sighted about 200 yards from the camp. The entire campsite was set up with bear boxes and rules about disposal of food products. However, just the smell of food cooking on fires must be a powerful attraction to an animal like a bear.

Do "innner city" kids even know what a bear looks like?!?!

In other news, people who don't want to risk plummeting to the earth because their chute didn't open should refrain from skydiving and those who would rather not end up like Quint should stay away from areas where great whites live.

Haven't these people any access to the news the past couple months? Lot of bears out there and a lot of attacks have happened this summer with a lot of that owing to human encroachment and the drought. While I sympathize with the folks involved, I also know that people LEAST likely to be killed by bears are people who don't go into bears' backyards carrying food and who are not carrying protection.

Kind of reminds me of the death of Dale Earnhardt where so many folks were "shocked" by it. Now while I don't have anything against him, it's simply not shocking or out of the blue to die in an auto wreck when you race souped up cars for twenty or more years. Seems more like an inevitability.

So, just retreat to the house and never go outside? If I did what you suggest, I would not be able to go out on my front porch. Totally unrealistic. I encounter bears all the time. In most cases, the old saying applies: "dont bother them and they will not bother you." Keep your porches clean and make sure your grills and cars do not have any thing the bear wants such as scones (one trashed our car because we left part of a scone in it). Be aware of your surroundings while hiking, expecially if you see small cubs. In that case, go in a different direction immediately! That is the most dangerous, because momma bear will protect without provacation. And always carry spray!!!!! Best deterrent.

I suggested no such thing. Where in the world did you get the idea that I was saying 'people should never go outside' or even 'do not go where sharks or bears are'? I simply said potential attacks come with the territory so expect them and be prepared for them.

You just spoiling for a fight or what?

I never encountered a bear but I've smelled a bear in my back yard; bears tend to have this strong odor which is kind of hard for me to describe. If you are ever at a zoo and you stand near a bear that is in a cage, you will know how bears smell.

This article did not mention what you should do if you encounter a bear. I learned on television that you should immediately lower yourself to the ground and lay down on your stomach and play dead. If the bear rolls you over make sure you land with your stomach facing the ground while still playing dead. Bears have very long claws that can scratch and rip out the internal organs and your abdominal area is not covered with rib bones to protect your internal vital organs like the back of your ribcage. Just keep playing dead and the bear will eventually walk away because they are usually only attracted to something that appears to be living and moving.

Do you mind if I ask who you learned that from?

As you'll see, the advice you offer applies only to an encounter with an aggressive grizzly bear that *clearly* that is not just charging but attacking, and clearly intends to prey upon you. In all other situations, very different advice is offered.

You seem like a nice lady Jane, but godd thing your advice does not carry an liability. I live in the North Lake Tahoe region and bears are an almost everyday encounter. Two night ago, a large bear walked right down our driveway.

Point being, the best defense against a bear, as recomennded by the Deparatment of Fish and Game, is bear spray.

Better a (not alive) bear then a (not alive), human being. Nobody should go into the woods without (ways of defending minors), at least. People like bears more than they like humans? Is it ok, now my comment?
12:29 AM on 08/05/2011
They are alive because the mother was not around, if she happens to be there, that would have been a tragedy. How can you take kids into the woods without ways of protecting them from a beast that wants to have them for lunch?

How is the color of the bear relevant to this story? Such reporting can lead to unfair racial profiling.

They have bears in New Jersey?
It's gotten to where people can't commune with nature without getting eaten by it.
Fine proof of Darwin's theory of survival through natural selection, though.

Yes, just not down the shore near Snooki and The Situation.

A 50lb bear has likely just been separated from its mother and that size tends to be pretty shy. Its boldness may be attributed to people feeding it. When a bear loses its fear of people then we have trouble.

A bear that weighed only 50 pounds? I thought that was a typo, but I fact checked and yes, a black bear can weigh that little.

Shame it's got to die.
