In the 2012 President's Budget Request, the National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII) is terminated. The NBII - Northeast Information Node (NIN) is a collaborative project between the Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN), the USGS NBII, and other regional partners (see below) , to facilitate sharing biological information from across of region. CIESIN, the lead partner for the node, is a center within the Earth Institute at Columbia University. The organization is uniquely designed to work at the intersection of the social, natural, and information sciences, and specializes in on-line data and information management, spatial data integration and training, and interdisciplinary research related to human interactions in the environment. Northeast Fact Sheet
With a regional focus on the states of New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine, the Northeast Information Node addresses regionally important issues, including the protection of drinking water supplies; the conservation of natural landscapes critical as wildlife habitat and important to the long-term environmental health of the region; and the retention of a working landscape providing farmland and forest products, green space for outdoor recreation, and important buffer lands between urbanizing areas.
