Programs
We are the sole, regional independent watchdog working to protect the entire Connecticut River basin. Whether the issue is thermal pollution from power plants or mysterious leachate from an undocumented pipe—we jump right in. We work to restore fish passage, and to make sure the water gets tested in neighborhood streams; we press businesses, communities and government to meet clean water standards, and help guide development away from sensitive shores. We work across four states to protect an 11,000 acre river basin of farms and forests, rivers and marshes, urban reservoirs and tidal estuaries. Here’s some of what we do.
Advocacy
We advocate for clean, healthy water throughout the watershed. It is water that nurtures over 2 million people -- as well as 5,000 species of plants, insects, fish and animals.
Restoration
We work to restore rivers: for people, fish, and everything else that depends on healthy rivers. Rivers are healthiest when all their inhabitants move up and down stream unencumbered. When that natural ebb and flow is lost, communities suffer.
Outreach
We want everyone to understand watersheds, rivers and streams. We feel that reaching out with river information is our best tool to motivate people to protect these critical resources.
Recreation
There is nothing like getting out on a river — and the Connecticut and its tributaries are spectacular. You can fish northern forest streams, paddle through tranquil rural countryside, or raise a sail and head into the estuary at Long Island Sound.
