DEP Issues Draft Environmental Impact Statement For Repair of the Delaware Aqueduct
Environmental Protection Commissioner Carter Strickland today released the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for DEP’s Water for the Future program, a $2.1 billion initiative that will ensure clean, reliable and safe drinking water for nine million New Yorkers for decades to come. Under the plan, DEP will break ground on the bypass tunnel in 2013, and complete the connection to the Delaware Aqueduct in 2021.

DEP Launches First Ever Watershed Forest Management Plan to Protect Water Quality
Environmental Protection Commissioner Carter Strickland today announced that DEP has launched a comprehensive Watershed Forest Management Plan that was developed in partnership with the United States Forest Service. The development of the plan is a key component of the 10-year Filtration Avoidance Determination awarded to New York City by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, which allows the city to be one of only five large cities in the nation to get a majority of its water from unfiltered sources.

DEP Completes Repairs to Gilboa Dam Spillway Damaged During Hurricane Irene
DEP has completed work to repair the Gilboa Dam's spillway, which was damaged during Hurricane Irene. The Gilboa Dam was structurally safe before Hurricane Irene and the integrity of the dam remains sound. The scheduled $350 million upgrade of the dam continues.

DEP Repairs Transportation Infrastructure Damaged By Hurricane Irene
Environmental Protection Commissioner Carter Strickland today announced that DEP emergency reconstruction work is underway at four locations as part of the ongoing recovery efforts to reverse damage caused by Hurricane Irene in the West of Hudson watershed.

DEP Commits $7 Million to West of Hudson Flood Mitigation
DEP has committed $7 million to improving flood studies and maps in the West of Hudson watershed through a contract with FEMA in order to limit the damage from similar storms and other flooding events in the future similar to Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee.

DEP and NYCHA Unveil Green Infrastructure Project at the Bronx River Houses
Environmental Protection Commissioner Carter Strickland and New York City Housing Authority Chairman John B. Rhea today announced the completion of a $1 million green infrastructure pilot project at the Bronx River Houses. The joint project between DEP and NYCHA beautifies the residential complex while reducing pollution, and includes a blue roof, rain gardens, stormwater chambers and a perforated pipe system to slow and capture stormwater runoff to avoid combined sewer overflows into the Bronx River.

Environmental Protection Commissioner Carter Strickland unveiled four bioswales on Dean Street in the Boerum Hill section of Brooklyn that will help reduce and manage stormwater in the area. Bioswales are designed to detain stormwater that otherwise would enter the combined sewer system when it rains.

Eelgrass Pilot Project in Jamaica Bay

DEP Builds on Expanded Eelgrass Pilot Project in Jamaica Bay
Environmental Protection Commissioner Carter Strickland today announced the fourth phase of the Eelgrass Pilot Project to help improve Jamaica Bay's local ecosystem. The project includes an additional 8,000 eelgrass plants in Jamaica Bay near Breezy Point. Eelgrass is a type of submerged aquatic vegetation that grows in estuaries and shallow bays. It is important for fish and shellfish as shelter and habitat.
