Educational Resources from State Agencies

Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality

The Arkansas DEQ covers regulatory programs, proactive programs, and education. The education arm focuses primarily on waste and recycling issues; it offers recycling grants for select schools and workshops for teachers (4-6 hours of professional development). All deal with solid waste and recycling issues. In addition, ADEQ's Public Outreach and Assistance Division has a library of slide shows, other environmental education materials, and will tailor presentations to individual audiences upon request.

Arkansas Game and Fisheries Commission

In addition to yearly harvest and population reports available for viewing, AGFC produces weekly reports relating to fish and waterfowl, guidebooks, free downloadable brochures, and publications and merchandise available for purchase. Educational programs and aid through AGFC exist for teachers via seven Regional Educational Coordinators (RECs) who serve as guest speakers and resources for classroom activities related to wildlife. The site also provides links to outdoor Conservation Education Centers that exist across the state, as well as numerous other educational programs, including the Aquatic Resources Education Program (ARE), which sets up aquariums, large and small, for classrooms.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries

LDWF manages and protects, through regulation enforcement, Louisiana 's wildlife, fur and refuges (coastal marsh management), marine fisheries, and inland fisheries. Education resources includes fishing clinics, the Terrebonne Parish Schools Aquatic Education Program, and Marsh Maneuvers, an intensive three-day wetlands education camp for senior 4-H students. Activity guides for upper elementary school and kindergarten through third grade students are Let's Go Fishing and Fishing for Fun, respectively.

New Mexico Department of Games and Fish

Regulatory agency for hunting and fishing in New Mexico. Links of interest are bird viewing information, cold and warm water fish guides for the state, and the GAIN (Gaining Access Into Nature) program for wildlife viewing. Under the Education link, the Department supplies coloring books for free download (pdf), as well as species brochures, and Elk Interactive Information (Flash).

Texas Parks and Wildlife

TPWD oversees parks and wildlife management and administers licenses for fishing, hunting, and boating in Texas . Under the Teacher Tool Kit link, lesson plans/activities for subjects such as ecological concepts, terrestrial ecology, aquatic activities, archeology, and journal and creative writing are available. Classroom posters and fact sheets are downloadable (pdf) for free. The Urban Outdoor Programs is intended to provide outdoor excursions for teachers and their students. Also available is an online freshwater fish identification guide.

Texas Commission on Environmental Quality

TCEQ regulates air, water, and land pollutants as well as natural resources for the state of Texas. At the K-12 Education link, a large quantity of curricula resources are available including lesson plans for teaching environmental science, school-wide recycling programs, games, coloring books, posters, and fact sheets, the majority of which cost $5.00 or less. Through Teaching Environmental Sciences, TCEQ is presenting a funded credit program for K-8 teachers to gain graduate credit and Continuing Professional Education credits.

Texas Forestry Service

TFS oversees forestry jurisdiction in the state of Texas. Educational program areas supported by TFS are in two areas: Fire Prevention (tips, burning ban information) and Forest Conservation (Red-Cockaded Woodpecker, sustainability, and forest terminology glossaries). Curricula aids cover the following areas: leaf identification, tree biodiversity, forest products, and forest ecology.
