Welcome to a very special place...

Picture yourself over 100 miles from land, in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico. At times, the seas can be very unforgiving, and the weather can turn foul in an instant. But here, in the midst of this unpredictable Gulf, lie three of the most beautiful and wild places in all the world. Manta rays, whale sharks, coral heads bigger than cars, hundreds of species of fish and invertebrates... This place teems with life!

Out With the Old...

A lionfish on display in a public aquariumThe arrival of invasive lionfish to the sanctuary was Galveston County's 4th most read news story of 2011.

Here's hoping for 2012 to be a year of new strategies for coping with this and other invasive species in the Gulf of Mexico.

Let's all make a resolution to keep non-native species from escaping or being released where they don't belong!

Wave Gliders Gather Info

Wave gliders ready for loading on board a ship.On December 9, sanctuary staff were invited by BP and Liquid Robotics  to participate in the launch of two wave gliders, from Freeport, TX, to conduct 60-day sorties in the sanctuary and western Gulf of Mexico.

The black glider in the photo is outfitted with an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP), and will be collecting data at East Flower Garden Bank. This data will contribute to an ongoing project led by Navy Research Lab (sanctuary expedition June 3-12, 2011).

The yellow glider is equipped with an acoustics package, and will be working around an eddy in the western Gulf, listening for marine mammals.
