| The mission of the University of Houston Coastal Center (UHCC) is to support environmental research on the Texas coast by providing researchers with access to field sites, equipment and facilities. The UHCC also supports service and educational activities related to the environment.
Current research activities of the UHCC include studies of air quality and micrometeorology, invasive species and prairie ecology, and climate change and coastal wetland ecology.
The UHCC is located in central Galveston County approximately 14 miles northwest of the Gulf of Mexico. Prior to World War II, the site was dominated by tall-grass prairie. The area was used by the military (Camp Wallace) during the 1940s, resulting in human disturbance of portions of the prairie and introduction of non-native species. Current land management goals include maintaining the areas of pristine prairie and, when possible, restoring areas invaded by exotic species or disturbed by human activity. |
