About the National Fish Habitat Action Plan
A growing number of fisheries professionals, state and federal agencies, tribes, foundations, conservation and angling groups, businesses and industries have joined together as partners in support of the National Fish Habitat Action Plan (NFHAP), determined to reverse the declines of America's fish habitats and the wild fish that depend on them. The mission of the National Fish Habitat Action Plan is "to protect, restore and enhance the nation's fish and aquatic communities through partnerships that foster fish habitat conservation and improve the quality of life for the American people."

A national assessment of the condition of fish habitats across the United States has just been completed and reported in THROUGH A FISH’S EYE: The Status of Fish Habitats In The United States 2010 . The report summarizes the results of an unprecedented, nationwide assessment of the human effects on fish habitat in the rivers and estuaries of the United States.

To enable the exploration of the national assessment results and related data, a concurrent release of the National Fish Habitat Action Plan Map Viewer has been released online. Users can investigate the condition of stream and coastal habitats, access detailed fine-scale information, and download data files and map services. The viewer was developed by the USGS Biological Informatics Program under the guidance of the National Fish Habitat Action Plan Science and Data Committee - the USGS News Release, "Visualize This: U.S. Fish Habitat Information Within Reach," highlights this partnership effort.

Partnerships are a key element of the National Fish Habitat Action Plan. Public and private partnerships developed as part of the NFHAP reflect the collaborative, locally-driven nature of the Plan. NFHAP partnerships are "self-identified, self-organized, and self-directed communities of interest formed around geographic areas, keystone species, or system types". Visit the NFHAP Fish Habitat Partnerships page to find partnerships in your region through a map, descriptions, and links.

The National Fish Habitat Board has released a first of its kind report summarizing the results of a detailed national assessment of fish habitat across the entire United States. The report, released in April 2011 and titled THROUGH A FISH'S EYE: The Status of Fish Habitats In The United States 2010 , focuses on the freshwater and estuarine fish habitats of the 50 states. It is accompanied by the release of the National Fish Habitat Action Plan map and data web tool.
