In the 2012 President's Budget Request, the National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII) is terminated. As a result, all resources, databases, tools, and applications within this web site will be removed on January 15, 2012. For more information, please refer to the NBII Program Termination page.
About the NAWQA Data Warehouse:
The USGS began its NAWQA program in 1991, systematically collecting chemical, biological, and physical water quality data from 42 study units (basins) across the nation. The Data Warehouse contains and links the following data:
Chemical concentrations in water, bed sediment, and aquatic organism tissues for about 2000 chemical constituents
Biological community data for 16,000 fish, algae and invertebrate samples
Site, basin, well and network characteristics with many descriptive variables
Daily stream flow information for fixed sampling sites
Ground water levels for sampled wells
7,600 surface water sites and 8,100 wells
49,000 nutrient samples and 31,000 pesticide samples as well as 9,000 VOC samples
2,500 samples of bed sediment and aquatic organism tissues
This page contains a collection of databases and mapping applications at a national scale. The data that can be accessed from the sites highlighted on this page are concerned primarily with aquatic habitats and environmental and water quality. They provide a necessary context for further analysis of aquatic organisms. For more detailed topics, please take a look at one of these three mapping applications:
National Fish Habitat Action Plan: information about the plan and the national assessment of fish habitat across the U.S. currently underway through the efforts of the NFHAP Science and Data Team
OBIS-USA: marine organism occurrence data and maps
Whirling Disease Data & Maps: collection of static and interactive applications displaying the presence and absence of whirling disease by point and watershed
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency: Surf Your Watershed
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's "Surf Your Watershed" program integrates environmental information available by geographic units including state, watershed, county, metro area, and tribe.
The site provides access to three main databases:
1. Adopt Your Watershed, a database of watershed groups,
2. Wetlands Restoration Projects, which displays ongoing wetlands restoration,
3. Environmental Websites Database, a directory of websites dedicated to environmental issues and information.
The United States Geological Survey has been collecting continuous stage, discharge (streamflow), and other instantaneous time-series data on the nation's rivers and streams since 1989. The Instantaneous Data Archive makes these historical data available to the public.
Note: The instantaneous discharge data provided through this web site should be viewed as raw, unreviewed data.

The National Fish Habitat Action Plan (NFHAP) is an unprecedented attempt to address a nationwide fish crisis by focusing on the loss and degradation of their habitat. The Plan was born in 2001 by an ad hoc group supported by the Sport Fishing and Boating Partnership Council. This group was inspired to develop a partnership effort for fish conservation in the image of the successful and strategic North American Waterfowl Management Plan.
As a federal-level partner, the USGS-NBII was designated by the National Fish Habitat Board to house the data delivery system supporting the National Fish Habitat Action Plan. Find out more about NBII's role in the NFHAP and the data associated with the Plan.
The NBII Program is administered by the Biological Informatics Program of the U.S. Geological Survey
