Marine Protected Areas

The National System of Marine Protected Areas

The U.S. is implementing a comprehensive, science-based and effective national system of MPAs. The national system will include existing MPAs across all levels of government to protect important habitats and resources.

The List of National System MPAs

The List of National System MPAs is the official inventory of all MPAs that have been formally included in and recognized as part of the National System of MPAs.

Nominating Sites to the National System

MPA programs are invited to nominate their eligible sites to be part of the national system of MPAs. Although managed independently, national system MPAs work together at the regional and national levels to achieve common objectives for conserving the nation’s important natural and cultural resources.

Analysis of U.S. MPAs

The U.S. has more than 1600 MPAs. These areas cover approximately 40% of U.S. marine waters, and vary widely in purpose, legal authorities, managing agencies, management approaches, level of protection, and restrictions on human uses.
