Artiodactyls are members of the taxonomic order Artiodactyla. They have an even number of toes on each hoof and are commonly called "even-toed ungulates." Order Artiodactyla is further subdivided into smaller taxonomic groups called families. In Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky, and Tennessee, two families are represented: deer and elk of the family Cervidae, and introduced wild hogs, pigs, and boars of the family Suidae. A third family, woodland bison (family Bovidae), existed in the region but was expirtated in the early 19th century and is no longer found here.
Artiodactyls of Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Tennessee are organized on this page by taxonomic families.
