American marsupials are members of the taxonomic order Didelphimorphia. Order Didelphimorphia is further subdivided into smaller taxonomic groups called families. In the southeastern United States, new world opossums of the taxonomic family Didelphidae are represented by a single species: the Virginia opossum (
Didelphius virginiana
).
