In the 2012 President's Budget Request, the National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII) is terminated. As a result, all resources, databases, tools, and applications within this web site will be removed on January 15, 2012. For more information, please refer to the NBII Program Termination page.
Freshwater Mussels of the United States and Canada
The new Freshwater Mussels of the US and Canada interactive application brings together resources from multiple authoritative sources including NatureServe and ITIS. The list includes 295 freshwater mussel species inhabiting the United States and Canada and features digital distribution maps. The application was created as part of a partnership between NBII-SAIN and NatureServe. The Southeast US Freshwater Mussel Species interactive application is also now available on the NBII-SAIN site.
Fisheries & Aquatic Resources
Bringing together people and information to promote fisheries conservation.
The Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Node (FAR) is a comprehensive, integrated, web-based resource providing access to databases, online mapping applications, and general fishery and aquatic resource information.

Discover the National Fish Habitat Action Plan and Data
[Image: National Fish Habitat Action Plan]
The National Fish Habitat Action Plan (NFHAP) is an unprecedented attempt to address a nationwide fish crisis by focusing on the loss and degradation of their habitat. The Plan was born in 2001 by an ad hoc group supported by the Sport Fishing and Boating Partnership Council. This group was inspired to develop a partnership effort for fish conservation in the image of the successful and strategic North American Waterfowl Management Plan.
As a federal-level partner, the USGS-NBII was designated by the National Fish Habitat Board to house the data delivery system supporting the National Fish Habitat Action Plan. Find out more about NBII's role in the NFHAP and the data associated with the Plan.
Find Fisheries Data with the Data Access Wizard
The Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (FAR) Data Access Wizard helps you discover and access fisheries-related data. Data can be searched using keywords, geographic extent, and data providers. Most of the available data is in a spatial, or GIS, format and can be accessed in a variety of ways:
Data can be directly downloaded as-is to your desktop computer.
Multiple datasets can be added to your own 'data cart' and downloaded simultaneously. Data in your cart can be re-projected on-the-fly prior to download.
Many datasets can also be viewed online via Web mapping applications or accessed dynamically by a desktop GIS client using ArcIMS or WMS MapServices.
All data in the FAR Data Access Wizard are fully documented with FGDC-compliant metadata and are free to the public.
In the Spotlight
Map Viewer
April 18, 2011 - The National Fish Habitat Action Plan Map Viewer has been released, offering a first-of-its-kind look at the status of fish habitats in the United States. Users can investigate the condition of stream and coastal habitats, access detailed fine-scale information, and download data files and map services. The viewer was developed by the USGS Biological Informatics Program under the guidance of the National Fish Habitat Action Plan Science and Data Committee.
Aquatic Habitats
FAR's Aquatic Habitats portal allows users to explore estuaries, lakes, oceans, rivers, and wetlands, and to connect to additional resources about these habitats.
National Fisheries Data Infrastructure (NFDI)
The NFDI maps the presence of fish species across the United States. Data from a fifth database - the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Fisheries Information System - were added to the NFDI in September 2010. Learn more about the NFDI or go directly to the NFDI site.
Are you interested in data sharing?
[Clip Art, unknown source]
Do you want to share data with other researchers or resource managers? We are interested in working with new partners to share data of all types, formats, and geographic extents.
Maybe you have a web-based fisheries application that you would like to highlight in another location. We will work with you to integrate links to your application into this site.
Or, perhaps you have metadata or need help developing metadata that meets federal standards. We have trained metadata specialists who can help you create standard metadata for your fisheries data and add that to the NBII Metadata Clearinghouse.
