Stop Aquatic Hitchhikers Campaign

The Stop Aquatic Hitchhikers! Campaign seeks to educate recreational users not to spread aquatic nuisance species through the following actions:

100th Meridian Initiative

The 100th Meridian Initiative is a cooperative effort between state, provincial, and federal agencies to prevent the westward spread of zebra mussels and other aquatic nuisance species in North America.

Prevention is the Key!

Beagle sniffing luggage. USDA.Control and eradication efforts of already established invasive species are often expensive and in many cases, ineffective. The best way to control invasive species is to prevent them from becoming established in the first place. Preventative measures included tightening international trade regulations, enacting state laws concerning possession of some species, creating early detection programs, and educating the public.

Protect our environment by not releasing un-wanted fish and aquatic plants.

The Habitattitude Campaign strives to encourage aquarium hobbyists, backyard pond owners, and pet owners to protect our aquatic resources by not releasing non-native species.

Habitattitude TM is about consumer awareness and responsible behaviors. By drawing attention to the potential environmental ramifications of the aquarium and water garden hobbies while promoting responsible consumer behaviors, Habitattitude TM avoids the definition debate surrounding "invasive species." Ultimately, the campaign seeks to eliminate the transfer and survival of any species outside of your enclosed, artificial system, which has the potential to cause the loss or decline of native plants and animals.

CollapseA Quantitative Approach to Predict Potential Nonindigenous Aquatic Plant Species Problems
Description: Overview of research study where investigators evaluated the potential for some aquatic plant species to pose a realistic nuisance threat to ecosystems in the state of Minnesota. The evaluation of these species involved two major phases. The first phase was a thorough literature review of these species, including life history and autecological characteristics. Information on home range and climatological barriers was also collected. The second phase focused on determining the likelihood of establishment in Minnesota and subsequent nuisance development. The CLIMEX model was useful in identifying locations around the world with climates that are similar to the climate in Minnesota. The CLIMEX model was found to be a promising tool to identify potentially problematic plant species for prevention efforts and regulatory exclusion.
