HANOVER, N.H. -- In an unprecedented move, the White Mountain National Forest was closed in advance of Tropical Storm Irene.
About 25 hikers on the Appalachian Trail were evacuated and invited to a shelter at a community center in Hanover.
Members of the community provided food and supplies to host the hikers. Most of them are from out of state.
Emergency crews feared flooding and falling trees were too dangerous to keep hikers in the forest.
The White Mountain National Forest is scheduled to reopen Tuesday.
