The Appalachian Trail Portal Community provides an Internet-based communication, information repository, and project management tool to aid in facilitating collaboration among those involved in environmental inventory and monitoring along the Appalachian Trail and throughout the Appalachian highlands. The ultimate goal of the community is to work towards establishing a continental scale mega-transect for monitoring environmental health.

To better support the A.T. MEGA-Transect Initiative, the NBII-SAIN A.T. Community project has identified the following objectives:

  • Research options for gathering, evaluating, storing, and disseminating existing data for science-based decision making.

  • Support the Initiative's thematic technical groups to assure quality of identified existing data sets so as to promote use of and access to high-quality scientific data and information.

  • Provide data access to datasets identified as relevant

  • Provide data management guidance (standards implementation, QA/QC, stewardship) for new projects.

  • Provide training on data management standards, best practices, and metadata so as to enable the generation of new high-quality scientific data and information in the context of the above.

The NBII Program is administered by the Biological Informatics Program of the U.S. Geological Survey
