The success of habitat preservation efforts in The Natural State is evident in several populations of the endangered Red-cockaded Woodpecker, in the growing herd of elk in Arkansas reintroduced along the along the Buffalo National River in the northern Ozark Mountains and in the increasing numbers of American black bears in the wild across the state.

Some 400 species of Arkansas birds, more than 155 species of butterflies, and some 20 animals listed as endangered or threatened by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are included in the state's wild menagerie.
